Abstract :
PURPOE: To evaluate the efficacy of topical mitomycin C for extenive recurrent conjunctival and corneal quamou cell carcinoma (CC).
DEIGN: Interventional cae erie
METHOD: A propective tudy wa conducted in a ingle intitution. Ten patient (ten eye) with extenive recurrent conjunctival and corneal CC were tudied. The patient received topical mitomycin C 0.04% one drop four time daily in the eye with CC. Treatment cycle were defined a 1 week uing medication followed by 1 week without medication. uch treatment cycle were repeated until reolution of the conjunctival malignancy wa clinically evident. The main outcome meaure were tumor repone and medication-related complication.
REULT: Of the ten patient, the median age wa 66 year (range 33–77 year). Before referral, the patient had undergone a median of two previou conjunctival tumor reection revealing the diagnoi of in itu CC in three cae and locally invaive CC in ix cae. At preentation, the tumor involved the limbu and cornea in all ten eye, forniceal conjunctiva in three eye, and taral conjunctiva in one eye. The extenive tumor affected a median of 10 clock hour of limbal conjunctiva and 10 clock hour of cornea, with corneal epithelial invaion for a median of 50% (range 20%–100%) of it urface. Mitomycin C 0.04% four time daily wa applied for a median of three cycle (range 1–4 cycle). Complete tumor regreion wa documented in all ten cae (100%). There wa no recurrence over a mean follow up of 22 month (range 6–50 month). Mitomycin C caued moderate temporary local irritation and conjunctival erythema and chemoi, but no long-term intraocular or extraocular complication.
CONCLUION: Baed on thi mall erie, topical mitomycin C 0.04% appear to be a afe and effective therapy for conjunctival or corneal CC, even when there i extenive recurrent tumor.
