Abstract :
PURPOE: To examine viion-pecific health-related quality of life in a cohort of patient with multiple cleroi (M) uing the 25-Item National Eye Intitute Viual Function Quetionnaire (VFQ-25), and to identify content area for a brief M-pecific viion quetionnaire. DEIGN: Cro-ectional urvey. METHOD: The VFQ-25 and a modified verion of the Optic Neuriti Treatment Trial (ONTT) Patient Quetionnaire were adminitered by in-peron interview to 80 patient at the Univerity of Pennylvania M Center. Binocular viual acuitie were obtained following a tandard protocol uing retroilluminated Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy tudy chart. REULT: Depite a median binocular viual acuity of 20/16 (20/12.5–20/250), VFQ-25 ubcale core in the M cohort were ignificantly lower (wore) compared with thoe of a publihed reference group of eye dieae-free patient (P = .0001–0.009, two-tailed t tet). Rank-correlation of VFQ-25 compoite (overall) core with viual acuity were modet, but ignificant (r = 0.33, P = .003), upporting contruct validity for VFQ-25 core in M population. even additional apect of elf-reported viual dyfunction in M were alo identified. CONCLUION: Patient with M have a high degree of elf-reported viual dyfunction that i not entirely captured by viual acuity. The VFQ-25 i an effective meaure of elf-reported viual lo in M. A brief M-pecific viion quetionnaire may provide additional ueful information when adminitered concurrently with the VFQ-25 in future invetigation of M and other neuroophthalmologic diorder
