Abstract :
PURPOE: To examine the degree of poterior capule opacification (PCO) after cataract urgery in patient with diabete and in nondiabetic age-matched control patient.
DEIGN: Cae-control tudy.
METHOD: The PCO denity value in 100 conecutive diabetic patient and in 100 nondiabetic age-matched control patient who underwent cataract urgery wa meaured uing a cheimpflug videophotography ytem at 1 week and at 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 month after urgery. The incidence of neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laer poterior capulotomy wa alo evaluated. Furthermore, the tage of diabetic retinopathy and ytemic condition of the diabete were correlated with the degree of PCO.
REULT: No ignificant difference between the two group wa oberved in the mean value of the PCO for up to 12 month after cataract urgery. However, at 18 month and later, the PCO value in the diabetic group increaed ignificantly and wa ignificantly greater than in the control group. Kaplan-Meier urvival curve howed that diabetic patient were ignificantly more likely to require Nd:YAG capulotomy than control patient (P = .0139, Mantel-Cox log rank tet). Among the diabetic patient, there wa no ignificant correlation of PCO value with the tage of retinopathy. Furthermore, type of treatment, duration of diabete, and hemoglobin A1C did not correlate with the PCO value.
CONCLUION: Diabetic patient developed ignificantly greater PCO after cataract urgery than did nondiabetic patient, but among the diabetic, the tage of diabetic retinopathy and ytemic tatu of the diabete did not correlate with the degree of PCO.
