Abstract :
PURPOE: To compare eye that underwent urgery with untreated fellow eye to ae the efficacy of vitrectomy for diabetic macular edema. METHOD: In a nonrandomized clinical trial, even adult patient with mean age of 53 year (range 42 to 64) and the ame degree and duration of diabetic macular edema in both eye were followed up for more than 5 month after unilateral vitrectomy. The treated eye wa elected at random, but if viual diparity between the both eye wa more than 3 line, we operated on the wore ide. We compared the preoperative and potoperative foveal thicknee (the ditance between the inner retinal urface and retinal pigment epithelium) and the bet-corrected viual acuity by a certified examiner with thoe of the untreated fellow eye. REULT: In the even eye that underwent urgery, the foveal thickne decreaed by an average of 622 to 269 μm (P = .027, Wilcoxon igned-rank tet). In the fellow eye, the average decreae in foveal thickne wa from 617 to 546 μm (P = .176, Wilcoxon igned-rank tet). The bet-corrected potoperative viual acuity in the eye that underwent urgery improved more than 2 line in four eye (57%) and remained the ame in three eye (43%). In the fellow eye, it improved more than 2 line in one eye (14%), remained the ame in three eye (43%), and decreaed more than 2 line in three eye (43%). CONCLUION: In eye with diabetic macular edema that underwent urgery, the foveal thickne ignificantly decreaed after vitrectomy. Vitrectomy may be effective for treating diabetic macular edema
