Abstract :
PURPOE: A 1986–1987 urvey found 8.8% prevalence of open-angle glaucoma in the black population of t. Lucia, Wet Indie. Thi follow-up tudy aeed viual field lo progreion in untreated glaucoma patient and glaucoma upect 10 year later. DEIGN: Cohort tudy. METHOD: ubject were 205 glaucoma patient and upect; 1987 data included age, ex, viual acuity, and viual field meaured by automated threhold perimetry (Humphrey C 30-2 tet), and 1997 data included intraocular preure, viual acuity, and viual field meaured by the ame tet. Excluion criteria included field unreliability, field improvement due to viion improvement, nonglaucomatou viion deterioration, glaucoma treatment ince 1988, and coring of a viual field a end tage in 1987. Viual field were cored by algorithm for the Advanced Glaucoma Intervention tudy (AGI) and Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Treatment tudy (CIGT). REULT: By AGI criteria, 55% of 146 right eye and 52% of 141 left eye howed progreion of viual field lo. In linear regreion, progreion everity wa unaociated with ex, intraocular preure, or baeline viual field core, but wa poitively aociated with age (P < .001, right; P = .002, left). The cumulative probability of reaching end tage in 10 year in at leat one eye wa approximately 16% by AGI criteria. By CIGT criteria, 73% of 146 right eye and 72% of 141 left eye progreed. CONCLUION: Thee data provide a unique opportunity to tudy progreion of untreated glaucoma. The percentage of eye howing viual field lo progreion and the percentage reaching end tage were coniderably higher than in tudie of viual field progreion in treated eye.
