Purpoe
To report the clinical and microbiological profile of uture-related graft infection following penetrating keratoplaty.
Deign
Interventional cae erie.
Method
The medical and microbiology record of all patient who preented with uture-related graft infection and were een between January 1999 and December 2001 were reviewed.
Reult
Of 105 patient (105 eye) who developed corneal infiltrate following penetrating keratoplaty, 37 patient (24 optical and 13 therapeutic) were identified a having uture-related graft infection. The median onet of infiltrate after penetrating keratoplaty wa 87 day for 31 patient who preented within one year. Gram-tained mear of corneal craping were poitive in 27 (73%) of 37 patient, wherea culture were poitive in 32 (only bacteria, 30; mixed bacteria and fungi, 2). Thirty-even iolate were obtained from 32 patient (gram-poitive bacteria, 32; gram-negative bacteria, 3; fungu, 2). All gram-poitive iolate were enitive to cefazolin, chloramphenicol, and vancomycin, wherea one of three gram-negative iolate (Peudomana pecie) wa reitant to all the antibiotic teted. Of 32 patient, 30 (82%) reponded atifactorily to medical management.
Concluion
uture-related graft infection are uually caued by bacteria that are enitive to ciprofloxacin, cefazolin, and gentamicin, and the patient repond atifactorily to medical therapy.
