Abstract :
Purpoe To compare cerebral blood flow velocitie between open-angle glaucoma (OAG) patient and control, at baeline and during hyperoxia. Deign Obervational cohort tudy. Method A propective tudy wa conducted in a ingle intitution. ixteen OAG patient and 15 normal ubject, matched for age, were enrolled. Patient and control were tudied at baeline, while breathing room air, and during 100% oxygen breathing. The eye with the more evere viual field defect wa choen in glaucoma patient, while in control, the tudy eye wa choen randomly. ubject with hitory of diabete, cardiovacular, or repiratory dieae were excluded. Meaurement included brachial arterial preure, heart rate, intraocular preure and trancranial Doppler (TCD). Mean and peak velocity and pulatility index of the ipilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) were meaured by TCD. Reult At baeline, MCA mean and peak ytolic blood flow velocitie were ignificantly lower in glaucoma patient compared with control (mean velocity: 50.2 v 65.3 cm/, P < .05; peak velocity: 74.2 v 96.8 cm/, P < .05). Additionally, while hyperoxia ignificantly decreaed both mean and peak ytolic velocitie in MCA of control (mean velocity: 65.3 v 57.7 cm/, P < .05; peak velocity 96.8 v 87.9 cm/, P < .05), it did not caue any ignificant change in OAG patient. Concluion Glaucoma patient were found to have lower MCA blood flow velocitie and an abence of vaoreactivity to hyperoxia, compared with control. The relationhip of thee cerebral hemodynamic abnormalitie to glaucoma pathogenei and progreion remain to be explored.
