Abstract :
Purpoe
To examine the aging change in the amplitude of apparent accommodation in eye with a monofocal intraocular len (IOL).
Deign
Propective comparative obervational tudy.
Method
Two hundred eye of 200 patient who were cheduled for phacoemulification and monofocal IOL implantation were tudied. Forty patient in each of five age group—younger than 40 year of age or in their 50, 60, 70, and 80—were propectively recruited. Uing an accommodopolyrecorder, the amplitude of apparent accommodation of thee patient wa meaured approximately 1 month after urgery. Viual acuitie from far to near ditance after bet-corrected ditance were examined uing an all-ditance viion teter, and the region of accommodation at which each patient achieved a viual acuity of 20/29 or 20/40 wa determined and converted to the diopteric range. Contrat enitivity wa alo examined uing a viion contrat tet ytem.
Reult
The amount of apparent accommodation a meaured with the accommodopolyrecorder wa decreaed ignificantly in proportion to patient age (P < .0001). Furthermore, ignificant negative correlation wa found between the amount of apparent accommodation and actual age of each patient (r = −.491). The diopteric range of accommodation at which the patient achieved 20/29 or 20/40 alo reduced in proportion to the age. Although no ignificant difference were found in the mean far viual acuitie between age group, the intermediate and near viual acuitie worened ignificantly with age. The contrat enitivity wa alo reduced in proportion to the age.
Concluion
The amplitude of apparent accommodation in eye with a monofocal IOL decreae ignificantly in proportion to age, reulting in worening of bet-corrected intermediate and near viual acuitie.
