Abstract :
Purpoe To invetigate the effect of the viion of the fellow eye on the viual acuity of eye after ucceful macular hole urgery. Deign Propective conecutive erie. Method A conecutive erie of eye with ucceful macular hole cloure were tudied and aigned to one of two group according to the viual acuity of the fellow eye; a group with viual acuity le than 20/200 and a group with viual acuity of 20/200 or better. Preoperative and potoperative viual acuity in the two group wa meaured baed on the logarithm of the minimal angle of reolution (LogMAR), and potoperative viual acuity wa alo determined by uing the multiple-letter viual acuity chart, which permitted meaurement of viual acuity at an extrafoveal point. Reult Group 1 (<20/200) conited of 19 eye and group 2 (>20/200) conited of 51 eye. LogMAR viual acuity at 6 month potoperatively wa ignificantly better in group 1 than in group 2 (0.21 v 0.41, P < .01). The logMAR change 6 month after urgery wa ignificantly greater in group 1 than in group 2 (0.49 v 0.23, P < .01). There wa no ignificant difference between two group in logMAR viual acuity at 6 month potoperatively determined with the multiple-letter viual acuity chart (0.20 v 0.29, P > .05). Concluion Viual recovery after ucceful macular hole urgery i inverely correlated with viion in the fellow eye. Learning to ue eccentric fixation may contribute to viual improvement after macular hole urgery.
