Abstract :
Purpoe
To decribe a new, highly accurate, tactile technique to increae accuracy in the elf-adminitration of eye drop.
Deign
Interventional cae erie.
Method
Ten adult patient with lo of fixation (≤20/400) in one eye and ten adult patient with lo of fixation in both eye intilled one drop of artificial tear in each eye uing the technique normally employed at home. The time required to intill each drop, the number of drop queezed from the bottle, and location of the drop’ landing point on the face or eye were recorded. The patient were then intructed in a new technique for intillation, guided through the procedure once, and allowed to practice until comfortable with it. All meaurement were then repeated.
Reult
In patient with lo of fixation in one eye, an additional 3.2 ± 4.1 econd were required to intill a drop uing the new technique (P < .0001, paired t tet; range, −7–18 econd). The mean number of drop dipened decreaed by 0.1 ± 0.6 drop (P = .60, paired t tet; range, −2–1 drop). The accuracy of drop placement increaed from 80.0% to 82.5% (P = .32, paired t tet). In ubject with lo of fixation in both eye, uing the new technique increaed the time needed to intill a drop by 3.8 ± 3.8 econd (P < .0001, paired t tet; range, −3–13 econd). The average number of drop dipened decreaed by 0.1 ± 0.6 drop (P = .25, paired t tet; range, −2–1 drop). The accuracy of placement increaed from 63.0% to 85.0% (P = .001, paired t tet).
Concluion
Thi technique of drop intillation may be beneficial for patient with ignificant viual impairment in both eye.
