Abstract :
Purpoe To determine if a elf-adminitered health tatu quetionnaire completed by candidate for cataract urgery i beneficial for identifying medical comorbiditie and patient at rik for advere intraoperative and potoperative medical event. Deign Propective cohort tudy. Method Data were obtained from a large, randomized clinical trial of 19,250 cataract urgerie performed between June 1, 1995, and June 30, 1997. Preoperative data were obtained from a tandardized, elf-adminitered patient health quetionnaire and a hitory and phyical form completed by the patient’ phyician. A record of advere medical event on the day of urgery and through the firt 7 potoperative day wa recorded. Reult Repone to 21 quetion on the quetionnaire were highly pecific for 12 comorbid condition identified by the phyician hitory and phyical, ranging from 100% pecificity for arrhythmia to 91.3% pecificity for coronary artery dieae. Comorbid condition identified by the quetionnaire were aociated with imilar relative rik of advere event a thoe identified by the phyician hitory and phyical. Patient who had no comorbiditie identified by the quetionnaire had advere medical event rate inditinguihable from patient with no comorbid condition identified by the health provider hitory and phyical. Concluion The elf-adminitered quetionnaire howed a high degree of pecificity for 12 common comorbid condition in cataract patient. A quetionnaire uch a thi may be ueful in preoperative rik tratification.
