  • Abstract
    Purpoe To decribe the ophthalmologic outcome of cae of congenital toxoplamoi treated prenatally and potnatally. Deign Obervational cae erie. Method Follow-up ophthalmologic examination of 18 children born to mother who were infected before 25 week getation were performed concurrently by two ophthalmologit. The infection in thee children wa firt upected when their mother eroconverted during getation. Toxoplamic infection of the fetu wa diagnoed by fetal blood or amniotic fluid analyi. Mother were treated by a regimen of alternating pyrimethamine-ulfonamide and piramycin during getation. Pyrimethamine-ulfonamide treatment wa continued from birth to 1 year of age. Reult The median age of the children wa 4.5 year (range 1–11), when the follow-up ophthalmologic examination were performed. Viual acuity wa decreaed in only one child, who had extenive bilateral macular and peripheral leion. A poterior pole car wa noted in four eye (four children) for whom viual acuity remained normal. Peripheral leion were oberved in nine eye (five children). Both eye were normal in 11 of 18 (61%) of the children. Concluion In thee children at a high rik for congenital toxoplamic retinochoroiditi, a favorable viual outcome wa oberved in all but one cae.
