Abstract :
Purpoe To ae the effectivene of a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone for prophylaxi againt multiple drug-reitant taphylococcal keratiti after lamellar keratectomy in a rabbit model. Deign Experimental tudy. Method Twenty-eight New Zealand white rabbit underwent unilateral lamellar keratectomy uing a manual microkeratome followed by the placement of 1,000 colony-forming unit (CFU) of log-phae taphylococcu aureu bacteria under each flap. Eye (even in each group) were randomized and treated with one of the following agent: terile balanced alt olution, gatifloxacin (0.3%), ciprofloxacin (0.3%) or levofloxacin (0.5%) immediately and 6, 12, and 18 hour after urgery. Inflammation wa graded by two maked oberver at 24 and 48 hour, and the preence or abence of infectiou infiltrate wa determined. The mean and tandard deviation were calculated, and difference among the group were tatitically analyzed. Reult There were no flap complication encountered during urgery. Eye treated with ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and balanced alt olution developed infectiou infiltrate in five of even eye per group. Gatifloxacin-treated eye did not develop clinical infection and exhibited lower mean inflammation core (P < .01 compared with the other group). Concluion The fourth-generation fluoroquinolone, gatifloxacin, i an effective prophylaxi againt the development of keratiti after lamellar keratectomy in rabbit with an organim reitant to methicillin, levofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin.
