  • Abstract
Purpoe To invetigate the aociation of ocioeconomic and lifetyle factor with incidence of age-related cataract. Deign Population-baed longitudinal epidemiologic tudy. Method Peron aged 43 to 86 year (n = 4,926) living in Beaver Dam, Wiconin, were examined in 1988 to 1990, 1993 to 1995, and 1998 to 2000. Medical hitorie were obtained, and photograph of the lene were taken at each viit. Photograph were graded according to tandard protocol. Reult ocioeconomic and lifetyle factor conidered were income, education, occupation, moking, alcohol, caffeine, and multivitamin ue. After adjutment for age and ex, income (or education) wa inverely and moking wa directly related to the 10-year cumulative incidence of nuclear cataract. None of the factor were ignificantly aociated with incident cortical or poterior ubcapular cataract. We found no evidence in thee analye to ugget that hitory of multivitamin ue altered the relationhip of moking to the incidence of cataract. In model adjuting for all other ignificant rik factor, the individual ignificance value for each individual factor differed little from the model adjuting only for age and ex. Concluion Incident nuclear cataract wa aociated with income and moking 10 year earlier. There were no ignificant lifetyle expoure aociated with incident cortical and poterior ubcapular cataract.
