Purpoe To determine the incidence of and rik factor for cataract and to decribe the viual outcome of cataract urgery in eye with cytomegaloviru-related retinal detachment repaired with ilicone oil. tudy deign Retropective cohort tudy. Method A propectively generated databae of all patient with cytomegaloviru retiniti examined at a ingle tertiary care intitution wa ued to identify all cae of retinal detachment between October 1983 and Augut 1997. Data on retinal detachment repair, development of cataract, and outcome of cataract urgery were obtained retropectively. Reult Among 904 eye of 587 immune-compromied patient diagnoed with cytomegaloviru retiniti, 198 eye of 155 patient developed retinal detachment. Among thee, 106 eye of 90 patient underwent retinal detachment repair with ilicone oil. The Kaplan-Meier etimated median time to cataract wa 1.8 month after urgery with ilicone oil. The adjuted relative rik of cataract in eye that underwent retinal detachment repair with ilicone oil compared with eye that did not wa 6.74 (P < .0001). Eight of the eye that developed cataract underwent uncomplicated cataract urgery by phacoemulification and poterior chamber intraocular len implantation. Among thee, ix eye experienced ≥2 line of improvement in viual acuity. All developed poterior capule opacification a median of 7 day after cataract urgery. Four of five eye that that underwent neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laer capulotomy experienced ≥2 line improvement in viual acuity. Concluion There i a high incidence of cataract after urgery with ilicone oil tamponade for cytomegaloviru-related retinal detachment. Poterior capule opacification occur rapidly after cataract urgery in thee patient.
