Abstract
Purpoe
An aociation of glaucoma and leep apnea yndrome (A) ha been widely reported. We invetigated the larget group of patient with A thu far to determine the prevalence of glaucoma among thee patient.
Deign
Cro-ectional tudy.
Method
An intitutional tudy.
tudy population
A total of 228 patient with A.
Obervation procedure
leep tudie determined the repiratory diturbance index (RDI) during night leep. Ocular examination included intraocular preure (IOP) meaurement, optic dik evaluation, and Humphrey viual field examination.
Main outcome meaure
The A wa diagnoed a an RDI > 10. The RDI wa graded to determine the everity of A: mild (RDI, 10–19), moderate (RDI, 20–39), and evere (RDI > 40). Open-angle glaucoma wa diagnoed when a glaucomatou viual field defect matched the optic dik change, irrepective of IOP level.
Reult
Nineteen participant had mild A (mean ± tandard deviation, RDI = 15 ± 3), 129 had moderate A (RDI = 28 ± 5), and 80 had evere A (RDI = 54 ± 11). Open-angle glaucoma wa found in five A ubject, a prevalence of 2% (95% confidence interval, 0.7% to 5%). There wa no correlation between RDI and the preence of glaucoma (chi-quare = 1.18; degree of FREEDOM = 2; P = .6) or between the RDI and the IOP (r = −0.067; P = .316).
Concluion
The prevalence of glaucoma in A patient wa imilar to that in the general Caucaian population.
