Abstract :
Purpoe To ae the in vitro uceptibility of the mot common ocular bacterial iolate to everal antibiotic and verify changing trend in the antibiotic uceptibility in a 15-year period. Deign Experimental tudy. Method All culture poitive for taphylococcu aureu, coagulae-negative taphylococcu (CN), treptococcu p, and Peudomona p in conjunctival (n = 4,585) and corneal (n = 3,779) ample from patient een at the Federal Univerity of ão Paulo from 1985 to 2000 were evaluated. Culture were performed in liquid and olid media, and uceptibility tet were done to amikacin, gentamicin, neomycin, tobramycin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, cephalothin, and chloramphenicol. Reult Amikacin and neomycin howed an improvement of their enitivity during the tudy period (88%–95% and 50%–85%, repectively) for corneal and conjunctival ample. Gentamicin and tobramycin revealed a decreae of enitivity in time, from 95% to le than 80% in corneal and conjunctival ample. Ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin had good enitivity to all evaluated bacteria, better in conjunctiva (95%) than in cornea (90%). enitivity of . aureu to cephalothin decreaed during the tudy but wa till 98% for CN. Chloramphenicol had good enitivity to . aureu (85% in corneal and 92%in conjunctival ample), CN (87% and 88.5%), and treptococcu p (95% and 96%). Concluion Gentamicin, tobramycin, and cephalothin decreaed their in vitro uceptibility to all teted pathogen. The fluoroquinolone remained a good choice in the treatment of ocular infection, with high ucep-tibility to all pathogen teted. Chloramphenicol alo revealed an increae in it uceptibility to all bacteria evaluated.
