Abstract :
Purpoe
To ae viual function more than 10 year after an epiode of optic neuriti in patient enrolled in the Optic Neuriti Treatment Trial.
Deign
Longitudinal follow-up of a randomized clinical trial.
Method
Viion teting included meaure of viual acuity, contrat enitivity, and viual field. Quality of life wa aeed with the National Eye Intitute Viual Function Quetionnaire.
Reult
Examination were completed on 319 patient. In mot patient, viual function tet reult in the eye that experienced optic neuriti at tudy entry (“affected eye”) were normal or only lightly abnormal after 9.9 to 13.7 year. Viual acuity in the affected eye wa ≥20/20 in 74%, 20/25 to 20/40 in 18%, <20/40 to 20/200 in 5%, and <20/200 in 3%. On average, viual function wa wore in patient with multiple cleroi (M) than in thoe without M. Recurrent optic neuriti in either eye occurred in 35% of patient. uch attack were more frequent in patient with M (P < .001). The National Eye Intitute Viual Function Quetionnaire core were lower when viual acuity wa abnormal and when M wa preent.
Concluion
Mot patient retained good to excellent viion more than 10 year after an attack of optic neuriti. Recurrence were more frequent in patient with M.
