Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare the functional outcome of cataract urgery in term of viual ability between patient age younger than 84 year, 85 to 89 year, and 90+ year. urvival time will be etimated at 4 year.
Deign
Population-baed, obervational cae erie.
Method
We propectively evaluated elderly cataract patientʹ elf-aeed viual ability regarding reading, TV viewing, orientation ability, activitie of daily life, atifaction, and viual acuity (VA) before and approximately 3 month after cataract urgery. All patient operated on during a 1-year period from our geographically defined admitting area that participated with a quetionnaire were included (n = 837). urvival wa checked after 4 year.
Reult
Before urgery, the mot elderly were ignificantly more diatified with their viual function (P = .007). eventy-ix percent of 85+ improved their ubjective ability to read, and two-third of thoe unable to read newpaper print were able to read after urgery. A total of 79% of 90+ experienced improved potoperative ability to manage their daily live. Bet-corrected VA (BCVA) improved in 94% (90+ year of age), 90% (85 to 89 year of age), and 97% (younger than 84 year of age), repectively. After urgery, VA wa ignificantly wore with increaing age, alo after adjutment for ocular comorbidity (P < .0001). Patient with a BCVA improvement of le than 0.3 logarithm of the minimal angle of reolution unit, patient with comorbidity, and patient aged 90+ had approximately 3 time the odd of being diatified with viion after urgery. A total of 43% of 90+ year and 62% of 85 to 89 year were alive 4 year after urgery.
Concluion
Mot patient aged 85 and older had improved viual ability, acuity, and atifaction after cataract urgery. In term of viual function, urgery of ignificant cataract in the very old i beneficial alo when life expectancy i taken in account.
