Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the feaibility and advantage of uing perfluorocarbon liquid (PCL) perfuion to remove vitreou during uction-cutting vitrectomy in rabbit and pig eye.
Deign
Experimental tudy.
Method
Balanced alt olution (B) wa replaced by PCL perfuion during experimental vitrectomy. Oxygenated or nonoxygenated PCL wa ued in a recycling or a nonrecycling ytem. Recycling wa achieved by two ytem: a manual recycling ytem or a cloed-loop ytem. The experiment in thi tudy conited of: an in vitro olubility obervation, afety and feaibility of vitrectomy in rabbit eye, effectivene of vitrectomy with equal vitrectomy time in rabbit eye, and retinal tability and pigment and blood diperion in porcine eye. Toxicity wa aeed by a complete ophthalmic examination, endothelial cell count, electroretinography, and hitopathology.
Reult
Vitreou, blood, and pigment were immicible in PCL. Manual recycling required le amount of PCL than nonrecycling (15 v 25 cc). Oxygenated and nonoxygenated PCL were not toxic. Perfluorocarbon liquid infuion removed more vitreou than balanced alt olution in a 3-minute vitrectomy time uing the ame etting on the vitrectomy machine. The PCL infuion in porcine eye tabilized the retina and iolated vitreou cavity from pigment and blood and maintained a clear vitreou cavity.
Concluion
Thee data indicate that perfuion of PCL can be ued to remove vitreou with a uction-cutting probe in rabbit and pig eye. Retinal tability and iolation of the vitreou cavity at the time of vitreou removal along with PCL immicibility and it pecific gravity ugget that PCL ha a potential clinical ue a an irrigating olution to remove vitreou.
