  • Abstract
Purpoe To preent the microbial pectrum and uceptibilitie of iolate in endophthalmiti following penetrating keratoplaty. Deign Interventional cae erie. Method The 1,074 conecutive cae of endophthalmiti preenting to Will Eye Hopital between 1989 and 2000 were reviewed. Fourteen patient with endophthalmiti after penetrating keratoplaty were identified, and vitreou biopy iolate from thee patient were examined. Reult Eleven (78.6%) of 14 vitreou ample were culture-poitive, and two other (14.3%) had organim viewed on pathology pecimen, for a total of 13 (92.9%) organim-proven cae of endophthalmiti. Iolate included 10 (76.9%) gram-poitive cocci (ix treptococcu p., three taphylococcu p., one identified on pathology pecimen only) and three (23.1%) gram-negative organim (Proteu mirabili, erratia marcecen, one identified on pathology pecimen only). uceptibilitie to organim-appropriate antibiotic teting are reported, including cefazolin (ix of eight, 75.0%), ciprofloxacin (four of even, 57.1%), nafcillin (four of ix, 66.7%), and vancomycin (even of even, 100.0%). Concluion Thi i the larget erie on microbial uceptibilitie in potpenetrating keratoplaty endophthalmiti. We report a high percentage of culture-poitivity, and a high incidence of gram-poitive pecie, and in particular treptococcu pecie, with all teted gram-poitive organim uceptible to vancomycin.
