Abstract
Purpoe
To quantify the aociation between arcu and hyperlipidemia in an older population.
Deign
Cro-ectional population-baed tudy.
Method
Arcu and erum lipid were meaured in the Blue Mountain Eye tudy (n = 3,654, aged >49 year). Arcu wa graded a abent, partial (<180 degree) or circumferential (≥180 degree). Aociation between arcu and hyperlipidemia were aeed uing logitic regreion, adjuting for age and vacular rik factor.
Reult
Arcu wa trongly aociated with age (P < .0001). After age adjutment, arcu wa aociated with male ex (P < .01) and diabete (P < .02) but not with hypertenion or moking. Corneal arcu wa ignificantly aociated with progreively higher level of total choleterol over 5 mmol/l. Adjuted odd increaed from 1.6 for choleterol 6.0 to 6.9 mmol/l to 4.6 for choleterol >8.0 mmol/l, and wa 1.9 for high triglyceride >3.0 mmol/l.
Concluion
Thi population-baed finding confirm that corneal arcu wa aociated with hypercholeterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia in older peron.
