Abstract :
Purpoe To report a erie of patient with no previou hitory of herpe implex viru (HV) infection who had new onet of herpetic keratiti after penetrating keratoplaty (PK). Deign Noncontrolled, retropective cae erie. Method We included in the tudy the patient who had new onet of herpetic keratiti after penetrating keratoplaty for corneal dieae unrelated to HV infection who were een at the Cornea ervice at Will Eye Hopital (Philadelphia, Pennylvania) from January 1996 to December 2002. The diagnoi of HV epithelial keratiti wa baed on clinical characteritic of either a claic herpetic dendrite, a geographic ulcer, or a nonhealing epithelial defect that reponded only to antiviral therapy. Reult Fourteen patient were included in the tudy. Eight of thee (57%) had preented with a geographic ulcer wherea ix patient (43%) had a claic dendrite. The mot common primary corneal dieae that led to PK wa peudophakic bullou keratopathy (36%), followed by keratoconu (29%), Fuch dytrophy (21%), and corneal car unrelated to HV (14%). Concluion The ophthalmologit hould be aware of the poibility of herpetic keratiti in eye after PK, even in patient with no previou hitory of HV infection.
