  • Abstract
Purpoe To report the clinical feature and evaluate the viual outcome of eleven cae of herpe implex viru-2 (HV-2) related acute retinal necroi yndrome (ARN). Deign Retropective interventional cae erie. Method Twelve eye of eleven patient from two European center, diagnoed with HV-2 related acute retinal necroi yndrome were retropectively reviewed. Herpe implex viru-2 DNA wa detected by polymerae chain reaction in intraocular fluid (aqueou and/or vitreou). Finding at initial examination, clinical evolution with antiviral therapy, complication and final viual acuity were evaluated. Reult Herpe implex viru-2 DNA wa detected in all cae. No ample wa poitive for more than one viru. The mean age of dieae in the firt eye wa 36 year (ranged from 10 to 57 year). Five patient were women and ix were men. All patient were immunocompetent. Previou medical hitory included neonatal herpe (n = 1), previou ARN (n = 3), trauma (n = 1) and ytemic corticoteroid adminitration before occurrence of ARN (n = 3). Preexiting pigmented chorioretinal car were found in three cae. Patient were treated with high doe intravenou acyclovir or focarnet ± intravitreal ganciclovir ± interferon. The mean follow-up wa 14.5 month (from 5 to 22 month). At the end of the follow-up period, five eye (41.7%) howed improvement of viual acuity of two or more line. Final viual acuity wa 20/60 or better in four eye (33.3%), 20/400 or better in four eye (33.3%) and le than 20/400 in four eye. Concluion Hitory of neonatal herpe, triggering event uch a neurourgery, periocular trauma, high-doe corticoteroid, and chorioretinal car ugget that HV-2 retiniti reflect reactivation of HV-2 infection.
