  • Abstract
Purpoe To compare the viual outcome of macular tranlocation (MT) veru photodynamic therapy (PDT) for ubfoveal predominantly claic neovacularization in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Deign Nonrandomized clinical trial. Method Retropective review of 65 conecutive patient with ubfoveal neovacularization due to AMD. The follow-up wa at leat 6 month. Main outcome criteria were final bet corrected viual acuity and the gain in viual acuity. Reult A total of 29 eye were treated with PDT with verteporfin, and 36 underwent MT with choriocleral infolding. Both group were imilar for age, refraction, and leion ize. The initial viual acuity wa lower in the MT group than in the PDT group (20/200 veru 20/100). Mean follow-up wa 11 month for the PDT group and 14 month for the MT group. The mean diplacement of the fovea after tranlocation wa 1,274 μm (range, 250 to 1,900 μm). Mean number of retreatment by PDT wa 2.5. At 1 year, both group had the ame final viual acuity (20/200), but the improvement wa more favorable in the MT group (gain of 0.7 line in the MT group veru lo of 3.4 line in the PDT group, P = .007). One eye in the PDT group (4.3%) had a gain of 3 line or more veru eight eye (38%) in the MT group; the leion ize wa larger in the PDT group than in MT group (P = .036). Concluion In thi retropective tudy, MT eemed to allow a better preervation of viual acuity than PDT in ubfoveal neovacularization due to AMD. Further larger and controlled tudie are required.
