Abstract :
Purpoe To report three cae in which a ilicone-plate len wa explanted becaue of whitih depoit on the poterior optic urface. Deign Obervational cae erie with clinicopathological correlation. Patient and method In the three intance, the depoit were oberved at leat 2 year after uneventful cataract urgery. All of the patient had unilateral mild ateroid hyaloi in the concerned eye. After explantation of the lene, gro and light microcopic analye were performed. The poterior optic urface of the lene alo underwent canning electron microcopy coupled with energy diperive x-ray pectrocopy for analyi of the elemental compoition of the depoit. Reult Gro and light microcopic analye revealed well-demarcated area of whitih depoit on the poterior optic urface of the lene, a well a multiple pit caued by Neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laer treatment. The depoit formed an amorphou layer with a “crutlike” appearance, which wa confirmed by canning electron microcopy. X-ray pectrocopy analye demontrated the compoition of the depoit to be imilar to hydroxyapatite. Concluion The material opacifying the lene wa probably derived from the ateroid bodie or from a imilar proce that reult in thi vitreou condition. We were unaware of thi aociation between ateroid hyaloi and late potoperative dytrophic calcification of ilicone lene.
