Functional outcome after trypan blue–aited vitrectomy for macular pucker: a propective, randomized, comparative trial

Purpoe To evaluate funtional oucome after the intraoperative application of 0.06% trypan blue during vitrectomy for macular pucker. Deign Propective, randomized, comparative tudy. Method Forty-three eye of 43 conecutive patient, 30 women and 13 men, were incorporated in the tudy. Patient were randomized into two group: group 1 (n = 22) with trypan blue (0.06%) taining, and group 2 (n = 21) without trypan blue taining. Functional outcome (bet-corrected viual acuity, Goldmann perimetry) wa evaluated 1 day before urgery, at 6 week, and at interval of 3, 6, and 12 or more month potoperatively. Only patient with an idiopathic macular pucker were included. In all patient, a tandard three-port par plana vitrectomy with peeling of an epiretinal membrane (ERM) and the internal limiting membrane wa performed. No other modification of the urgical procedure, except the ue of trypan blue wa made between the two group. Reult Mean age wa 68.9 year in group 1 (with trypan blue) and 69.4 in group 2 (without trypan blue). Median bet-corrected viual acuity wa 20/63 in both group (range, 20/200–20/40; P > .5) before urgery. Mean follow-up time wa 5.8 month in group 1 and 5.3 month in group 2. After urgery, median viual acuity had increaed to 20/40 in both group (range, 20/500 to 20/20 in group 1 and 20/100 to 20/20 in group 2; P < .001 for both group). The difference between both group wa not tatitically ignificant (P > .5). An improvement of viual acuity (gain of 2 or more line) wa een in 16 patient of both group. No potoperative viual field defect were noted. Concluion Trypan blue–aited vitrectomy for macular pucker lead to good functional reult with no dye-related advere effect after hort follow-up. Trypan blue might be epecially applicable in cae in which the border of the ERM are difficult to define. Hypothetical advantage, uch a fewer recurrence of ERM after trypan blue taining, will have to be evaluated during further follow-up of patient.
