Abstract
Purpoe
To evaluate the clinical outcome and quantify hitologically the amount of microcopic internal limiting membrane (ILM) and epiretinal membrane (ERM) preent in ILM and ERM pecimen obtained from ERM urgery.
Deign
Interventional conecutive cae erie.
Method
Patient cheduled for ERM urgery were recruited propectively. Par plana vitrectomy, removal of ERM, and ILM peeling with indocyanine green (ICG) taining were performed in all patient. Epiretinal membrane and ILM pecimen were ent for hitologic examination. The amount of ERM preent in ILM pecimen and the amount of ILM preent in ERM pecimen were quantified by manual counting. Outcome meaure include change in bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA), proportion of cae with 2 or more line of viual improvement, anatomic outcome, proportion of microcopic ERM within ILM, and microcopic ILM within ERM.
Reult
Eighteen eye in 18 patient were operated with a mean follow-up of 19.3 month. There were 13 primary ERM and five econdary ERM. The mean logMAR BCVA improved from 0.83 preoperatively to 0.49 potoperatively (P < .001). The mean line of improvement in BCVA wa 3.3 line with 14 patient (77.8%) who had 2 or more line of BCVA improvement. Hitologic evaluation of the pecimen howed no ignificant correlation with the final BCVA of 20/50 or better. Eleven (61.1%) of the ILM pecimen howed variou amount of microcopic ERM and 16 (88.9%) of the ERM pecimen howed variou amount of ILM fragment. The mean proportion of ERM within ILM pecimen wa 4.69% and that of ILM within ERM pecimen wa 51.5%. No ignificant recurrence of ERM wa found.
Concluion
Recurrence of ERM may be minimized by removing reidual microcopic ERM preent on the ILM. Indocyanine green-aited ILM peeling in ERM urgery appear to have favorable viual and anatomic outcome.
