Abstract :
Purpoe To invetigate the tructure-function relationhip between optical coherence tomography (OCT) macular retinal and peripapillary nerve fiber layer (NFL) thickne and automated viual field (VF) finding. Deign Cro-ectional obervational tudy. Method Retropective intitutional tudy where 150 conecutive eye (101 ubject) from a glaucoma ervice were included. All the participant had full ophthalmic evaluation, VF teting and prototype OCT canning at the ame viit. Orthogonal OCT macular analyi wa obtained to maximize the ampling of the area of interet. Pearon age-adjuted correlation wa determined between macular retinal thickne and peripapillary NFL thickne. Area under the receiver operator characteritic (AROC) curve for the aociation between macular retinal thickne and peripapillary NFL thickne and VF finding were calculated in a ubgroup of eye without VF defect and eye with VF defect confined to one hemifield. Reult The correlation between macular retinal and peripapillary NFL meaurement ranged between r = .27 to .54 for quadrant, .44 to .55 for hemiretina, and .52 for the overall mean. Area under the receiver operator characteritic for macular thickne were higher in area correponding to the VF defect location than the noncorreponding location. Area under the receiver operator characteritic for peripapillary NFL thickne were higher than for the macular retinal thickne. Including both macular retinal thickne and peripapillary NFL thickne meaurement in the logitic regreion model yielded AROC (range: .69 − .77) imilar to thoe found for the peripapillary NFL alone. Concluion Macular retinal thickne, a meaured by OCT, wa capable of detecting glaucomatou damage and correponded with peripapillary NFL thickne; however, peripapillary NFL thickne had higher enitivity and pecificity for the detection of VF abnormalitie.
