Abstract :
Purpoe To critically review the exiting literature concerning rik factor for progreion of ocular hypertenion and glaucoma to ait in aigning level of rik for individual patient. Deign Evidence-baed review. Method A panel of phyician pecializing in treatment of glaucoma patient wa convened to critically analyze publihed population-baed tudie of ocular hypertenion and glaucoma progreion. The trength of evidence in upport of reported rik factor wa weighed. Reult Many putative rik factor for progreion of ocular hypertenion or glaucoma have been reported in the literature. The rik factor mot trongly upported by evidence are higher intraocular preure (IOP), greater cup-to-dik ratio, thinner central corneal meaurement, and older age. Black race doe not appear to be an independent rik factor, although black individual tend to have thinner cornea, greater cup-to-dik ratio, and higher IOP, which increae their rik. The limited number of tudie in which other upected rik factor are reported prevent drawing firm concluion about their importance at thi time. Concluion Only a ubet of patient with ocular hypertenion will eventually develop glaucoma. Deciion regarding the implementation and extent of therapy for ocular hypertenion can be difficult and require an undertanding of the relative importance of rik factor for progreion. Thi review dicue the trength of evidence upporting reported rik factor and may be ueful in aeing the rik for progreion of individual patient.
