Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate whether an index baed on hole configuration can be ued to predict viual outcome in eye with idiopathic macular hole.
Deign
Propective interventional cae erie.
Method
Thirty-five eye of 32 patient with idiopathic tage 2 or 3 macular hole were enrolled in thi tudy. The bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA), cro-ectional image of the macular hole by optical coherence tomography (OCT), and retinal thickne in the central (<1000 μm), inner (1000 to 2220 μm), and outer ring area (2220 to 3450 μm) a defined by the OCT retinal mapping program were evaluated preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 month potoperatively. The change in retinal thickne of the inner ring area at the 6-month potoperative period wa ued to evaluate the degree of preoperative retinal deformation. The macular hole index (MHI) (ratio of hole height to bae diameter of hole) wa calculated and correlated with minimum diameter of hole, bae diameter of hole, the potoperative decreae in macular thickne, and the potoperative BCVA. The potoperative BCVA wa further evaluated in two patient-matched group.
Reult
Retinal thickne value in the inner ring area were decreaed at the 1-month potoperative period. MHI ignificantly correlated with the potoperative decreae in macular thickne in the inner ring area at 6 month (correlation coefficient = −0.632, P = .030, pearman analyi) and with the potoperative BCVA (P = .013, multiple regreion analyi). Potoperative BCVA in the MHI ≥0.5 group wa better than that in the MHI <0.5 group (P = .032, Mann-Whitney tet).
Concluion
The MHI i a ratio eaily calculated from OCT tranvere image of the macular area. The MHI repreent the preoperative configuration of a macular hole and i a prognotic factor for viual outcome.
