Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the incidence of and reaon for voluntary reident attrition from ophthalmology training program.
Deign
Retropective urvey.
Method
A urvey wa mailed to reidency program director of the 121 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education–accredited ophthalmology reidency program aking them to report the number of reident who withdrew from training during 2001 to 2002 and the reaon for withdrawal.
Reult
Of 102 reponding program, 13 (12.7%) had one reident withdraw from training in the academic year 2001 to 2002. Thee 13 reident repreented 1.1% of all ophthalmology reident in training at the reponding intitution during that academic year. The mot frequent reaon for withdrawing wa to enter another medical pecialty.
Concluion
Voluntary reident attrition from ophthalmology training program i uncommon. The 1.1% attrition rate in thi tudy i the lowet among publihed report of attrition from other pecialtie.
