Abstract :
Thi retropective, noncomparative tudy determined the long-term afety and effectivene of laer-in-itu keratomileui (LAIK) in the treatment of refractive error following penetrating keratoplaty (PKP). Fifty-even eye of 48 patient with aniometropia or high atigmatim who were intolerant of pectacle or contact len correction were included in the analyi. The mean follow-up after the LAIK wa 21.4 ± 14.2 month (range, 3 to 60 month). Preoperatively, the mean pherical equivalent wa −4.19 ± 3.38 D, the mean atigmatim wa 4.67 ± 2.18 D, and the bet corrected viual acuity wa 20/40 or better in 74% eye. Two year potoperatively, the mean pherical equivalent wa −0.61 ± 1.81 D, the mean atigmatic error wa 1.94 ± 1.35 D, and the bet corrected viual acuity wa 20/40 or better in 86% eye. The uncorrected viual acuity wa 20/40 or better in 43% eye. A gain of 1 or more line of bet corrected viual acuity occurred in 29% eye, while 7% lot 2 or more line of bet corrected viual acuity. Five eye (9%) had repeat corneal tranplant, three becaue of irreverible graft edema unrelated to LAIK, and two becaue of peritent unacceptable irregular atigmatim. Thi tudy how that LAIK i effective in reducing ametropia after PKP. Proper patient couneling i neceary becaue the reult of LAIK after PKP are not a good a, and complication are more frequent than in eye with naturally occurring myopia and atigmatim.—Michael D. Wagoner
