Abstract :
Purpoe To evaluate the rate of axial growth after congenital cataract urgery. Deign Propective obervational cae erie. Method Rate of axial growth of 158 eye (79 children < 10 year) undergoing urgery wa correlated with age at urgery, laterality, and viual axi obcuration. After meauring axial length (AL) at each follow-up, the mean AL wa calculated, adding the AL of all eye divided by their total number. Rate of axial growth i the percentage difference between preoperative mean AL and mean AL at lat follow up. The temporal profile of RAG i the difference between two conecutive mean AL with repect to the previou reading. The follow-up period wa 58.96 ± 2.02 month. The tudent’ paired t tet and independent ample t tet were applied. The main outcome meaure wa RAG. Reult Rate of axial growth in children operated at ≤ 1 year (23.5%) wa ignificantly higher than in thoe at ≤ 3 year (4.8%; P = .0001, confidence interval [CI] 1.05–3.2) and at ≤ 10 year (4.3%; P = .0001, CI 1.3–3.1). In children operated at ≤ 1 year, temporal profile of RAG wa higher in the firt 2 year after urgery. Rate of axial growth wa higher in patient with unilateral peudophakia at ≤ 1 year (25.53%) than in age-matched patient with bilateral peudophakia (18.50%; P = .001, CI −13 to −0.2). Rate of axial growth wa negligible in children with viual axi obcuration in any group. Concluion Rate of axial growth i higher in children ≤ 1 year and increae until the econd year after urgery. Unilateral peudophakia revealed accelerated growth compared with bilateral peudophakia. Viual axi obcuration doe not influence rate of axial growth.
