Viual function and ubjective perception of viual ability after macular hole urgery

Purpoe To evaluate the functional and anatomical reult of macular hole urgery and to explore it effect on patientʹ Health-Related Quality Of Life (HR-QOL) and to invetigate the aociation between elf-reported HR-QOL and conventional meaure of viual function. Deign Cae erie. Method The National Eye Intitute 25-Item Viual Function Quetionnaire (VFQ-25) and the 36-Item hort-Form Health urvey (F-36) were elf-adminitered by 30 patient before and 4 month after macular hole urgery. Preoperative, intraoperative, and potoperative clinical data were collected including viual acuity, contrat enitivity, and metamorphopia. Multi-item cale rating different apect of HR-QOL were compared before and after urgery, and their correlation with traditional method of outcome evaluation wa analyzed. Reult Macular hole cloure wa achieved in 26 patient (87%). Mean LogMAR viual acuity improved by 6 ± 10 letter for ditance and 7 ± 12 letter for near. Metamorphopia wa reduced by a mean of 35 ± 70 quare on Amler chart, and Pelli-Robon contrat enitivity decreaed by a mean of −0.09 ± 0.3 log unit potoperatively. The VFQ-25 compoite core a well a cale core aociated with general viion, near viion, viion-related mental health, and role difficultie were ignificantly improved (P < .05) after ucceful cloure of macular hole. Converely out of the eight F-36 health concept, limitation in uual role activitie becaue of emotional problem wa the only one that ignificantly improved potoperatively. Both baeline and potoperative bet-corrected viual acuity ignificantly correlated with mot of the VFQ ubcale core before and after urgery, repectively. Concluion In thi cae-erie, macular hole urgery appear to have a beneficial effect on patientʹ ubjective perception of viual function. The ue of viion-targeted health tatu quetionnaire in conjunction with detailed clinical examination provide a more comprehenive overview of individualʹ daily well-being after urgical intervention. Further controlled tudie are required to confirm our finding.
