Anti-α-enolae antibodie in cancer-aociated retinopathy with mall cell carcinoma of the lung

Purpoe To preent a cae of cancer-aociated retinopathy (CAR) in a patient with mall cell carcinoma of the lung and antiretinal antibodie who experienced viual ymptom before diagnoi of cancer. Deign Cae report. Method A 61-year-old man with a udden lo of viion and photophobia wa referred to the ophthalmology ervice. Antiretinal antibodie were determined by Wetern blot analyi. Reult The patient wa found to have mall cell carcinoma of the lung without metatai and wa urgically treated. Hi viual lo wa aymmetrical. The full field ERG wa normal, even though hi viion in the right eye became progreively wore. The patient wa treated with methylpredniolone and howed ignificant improvement. Before urgery, erum tet howed antiretinal protein 35-kD; 1 week after urgery, antiretinal protein 35-kD and 46-kD (α-enolae); and 1 month after urgery, anti-α-enolae. Concluion Typical viual ymptom for paraneoplatic retinopathy are not alway preent. The abence of antirecoverin antibodie doe not exclude a diagnoi of CAR.
