Abstract :
Purpoe
To report on viual outcome after intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide for exudative age-related macular degeneration.
Deign
Interventional comparative non-randomized clinical trial.
Method
etting: Intitutional. patient: Twenty conecutive patient with bilateral exudative age-related macular degeneration with minimally claic or occult ubfoveal neovaculariation. intervention: Unilateral intravitreal injection of about 20 mg triamcinolone acetonide into the eye (tudy group) more everely affected or howing more pronounced progreion of the dieae. Mean follow-up wa 13.5 ± 4.1 month. main outcome meaure: Viual acuity.
Reult
In the tudy group, viual acuity increaed ignificantly (P < 0.001) from 0.96 ± 0.32 logMar to a mean maximum of 0.76 ± 0.30 logMar during follow-up. An increae in bet viual acuity during follow-up wa found in 18 (90%) eye. In 11 (55%) eye and 7 (35%) eye, repectively, bet viual acuity increaed by at leat two nellen line and three nellen line, repectively. In the control group, viual acuity at baeline and the highet viual acuity meaurement during follow-up did not vary ignificantly (P = 0.90). Comparing tudy group and control group, viual acuity gain wa ignificantly (P = 0.003) higher in the tudy group. Correpondingly, the number of eye with an increae in viual acuity (P = 0.002) and with an increae in viual acuity higher ≥ 3 line compared to a lo of ≥ 3 line wa ignificantly (P = 0.027) higher in the tudy group.
Concluion
Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide may temporarily increae viual acuity in eye with exudative age-related macular degeneration.
