Abstract :
Purpoe
To decribe the incidence of viion lo and of ocular complication attributable to birdhot retinochoroidopathy and to decribe the aociation between therapy and the incidence thereof.
Deign
Retropective cohort tudy.
Method
etting: ingle-center, academic practice. tudy population: Forty patient with birdhot retinochoroidopathy were evaluated from January 1984 through March 2004. obervation procedure: Demographic and clinical information on patient diagnoed with birdhot retinochoroidopathy wa collected. main outcome meaure: Viual acuity and viual field lo; ocular complication including cytoid macular edema (CME).
Reult
In affected eye, the frequencie of viion lo to 20/50 or wore and to 20/200 or wore and of CME at preentation were 33%, 13%, and 20%, repectively. Patient who preented with a duration of dieae of ≥ 30 month had higher frequencie of viual impairment to 20/50 or wore (68% v 32%; P = .004) and to 20/200 or wore (32% v 9%; P = .01), and had a higher frequency of CME (38% v 14%; P = .02) than patient who preented with a duration of dieae <30 month. The incidence rate on follow-up for viion lo to 20/50 or wore and to 20/200 or wore were 13% and 4% per eye-year (EY), repectively. The incidence of CME wa 10%/EY. Ue of immunouppreive drug therapy wa aociated with a reduced rik of developing CME (relative rik = 0.17; 95% confidence interval: 0.05, 0.64; P = .009).
Concluion
Birdhot retinochoroidopathy i a progreive dieae with the potential for viual impairment. Patient who preent at a later date after the onet of dieae were more likely to have viion impairment and CME. Ue of long-term immunouppreive therapy may reduce the rik of CME.
