Abstract
Purpoe
To ue optical coherence tomography (OCT) to characterize the intraretinal change aociated with macular edema (ME) according to it etiology.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
eventy-eight eye of 78 patient with ME were examined retropectively by OCT, uing the Humphrey 2000 OCT ytem (Humphrey Co., an Leandro, California). ME etiologie were diabetic retinopathy (27 cae), central retinal vein occluion (18 cae), peudophakia (15 cae), poterior uveiti (10 cae), and retiniti pigmentoa (eight cae). Macular thickne wa meaured uing OCT mapping oftware. It wa correlated with logarithmic viual acuity.
Reult
In 72 of 78 cae (92%), ME wa located in the outer retinal layer. erou retinal detachment wa preent in 29 of 78 cae (37%). It wa mot frequent in central retinal vein occluion (10 of 18 cae, 56%). There were no ignificant difference in viual acuity (P = .26) or macular thickne (P = .95) whether or not erou retinal detachment wa combined with ME. The poterior hyaloid wa partially detached in 17 of 78 cae (22%) of overall cae. erou retinal detachment did not correlate with partial poterior hyaloid detachment (P = .6). Mean macular thickne ranged from 506 μm in central retinal vein occluion to 373 μm in retiniti pigmentoa. Viual acuity correlated with macular thickne in diabetic retinopathy (R = 0.55; P = .0027) and peudophakia cae (R = 0.66; P = .016).
Concluion
OCT characterized the retinal morphologic change aociated with ME, epecially the vitreomacular relationhip and ub-clinical erou macular detachment. Thi detachment did not correlate with poor viual acuity. Macular thickening only correlated with viual lo in diabetic retinopathy and peudophakia.
