The Tube Veru Trabeculectomy tudy: Deign and Baeline Characteritic of tudy Patient

Purpoe The Tube Veru Trabeculectomy (TVT) tudy will compare the afety and efficacy of nonvalved tube hunt urgery to trabeculectomy with mitomycin C in patient with previou intraocular urgery. Deign Multicenter randomized clinical trial. Method etting: 17 Clinical Center. tudy population: Patient 18 to 85 year of age who have undergone previou trabeculectomy, cataract extraction with intraocular len implantation, or both and have inadequately controlled glaucoma with intraocular preure (IOP) ≥18 mm Hg and ≤40 mm Hg on tolerated medical therapy. intervention: tudy patient were randomized to undergo placement of a 350-mm2 Baerveldt glaucoma implant or trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (0.4 mg/ml for 4 minute). main outcome meaure: IOP, complication rate, viual acuity, viual field, quality of life, reoperation for glaucoma, and need for upplemental medical therapy. Reult A total of 212 patient were enrolled between October 1999 and April 2004. The age of the tudy population wa 71.0 ± 10.4 year (mean ± D), and 53% were women. The baeline IOP wa 25.3 ± 5.3 mm Hg (mean ± D). There were no ignificant difference in the demographic and ocular characteritic between the 2 treatment group. Concluion Practice pattern vary in the urgical management of glaucoma, and there are differing opinion among glaucoma urgeon regarding the preferred urgical approach in patient who have undergone previou cataract extraction and/or failed filtering urgery. Forthcoming data from the TVT tudy hould provide valuable information comparing two urgical procedure commonly ued in thi patient population.
