Method
Review of the clinical, laboratory, photographic, and pathologic record of a patient with a gouty tophu at the medial canthu.
Reult
A 27-year-old man had a 3-year hitory of gouty arthriti and poorly controlled hyperuricemia. A medial canthal ma without dicomfort developed gradually over 3 month. An exciional biopy wa performed, and the tiue wa fixed in formalin for pathology. Analyi of a routine hematoxylin-and-eoin–tained ection dicloed a multilobulated peudocyt filled with amorphou eoinophilic material. Further taining with nonaqueou alcoholic eoin and viewed under a polarizing microcope indicated the preence of birefringent urate crytal.
Concluion
Gouty tophu can develop progreively at the medial canthu, epecially in people with uncontrolled hyperuricemia. A formalin-fixed pecimen, tained with nonaqueou alcoholic eoin, demontrate abundant birefringent urate crytal under a polarizing microcope.
