Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine the prevalence and caue of amblyopia in young adult Chinee, Indian, and Malay men in ingapore.
Deign
A population-baed cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Bet-corrected viual acuitie of all ingaporean men born in the year 1978 to 1983 were meaured before enlitment into military ervice. Thoe with BCVA of 6/12 or wore were examined by an ophthalmologit for the preence of amblyopia and other caue.
Reult
Of the 122,596 men examined, there were 428 with amblyopia, an overall prevalence of 0.35%. The prevalence wa imilar among Chinee (0.34%), Malay (0.37%), and Indian (0.41%, P = .52). Aniometropic amblyopia wa the mot common type of amblyopia and trabimic amblyopia wa more common in Indian. There were little racial difference in the prevalence of meridional or form deprivation amblyopia.
Concluion
The overall prevalence of amblyopia wa low and wa imilar among the three racial group in young adult ingaporean male.
