Abstract :
Purpoe To invetigate racial/ethnic difference in the development of uveal malignant melanoma in a large population-baed tudy. Deign Obervational cro-ectional tudy. Method With the 1992 to 2000 data that wa provided by the National Cancer Intitute’ urveillance, Epidemiology, and End Reult Program, we calculated age-adjuted incidence rate of uveal melanoma in variou racial/ethnic group (black, Aian and Pacific Ilander, Hipanic, and non-Hipanic white). In addition, we calculated the tandard incidence ratio (rik ratio) and 95% confidence interval to decribe the difference within thee racial/ethnic group. Reult From 1992 to 2000, there were a total of 1352 uveal melanoma that were diagnoed in 11 urveillance, Epidemiology, and End Reult regitrie with known racial/ethnic group. The annual age-adjuted incidence (per million population) of uveal melanoma wa 0.31 (black), 0.38 (Aian), 1.67 (Hipanic), and 6.02 (non-Hipanic white). The difference in the incidence of uveal melanoma between each racial/ethnic group wa highly tatitically ignificant, with the exception of the black veru the Aian population in which there wa no tatitically ignificant difference. Concluion The relative rik of uveal melanoma wa 1.2 for Aian and Pacific Ilander patient, 5.4 for Hipanic patient, and 19.2 for non-Hipanic white patient a compared with the black patient. If the non-Hipanic white population and the Hipanic population were combined, then the overall white:black ratio wa 18:1.
