  • Abstract
Purpoe To evaluate the percentage and rik indicator leading to retinal redetachment in HIV (human immunodeficiency viru) patient with CMV (cytomegaloviru) retiniti related retinal detachment that were repaired with ilicone oil, and then ubequently underwent oil removal. Deign Retropective, noncomparative interventional cae erie. Method The tudy cohort conited of a erie of 15 eye in 14 patient with HIV and CMV retiniti with a retinal detachment (RD) repaired with ilicone oil at a ingle center and followed from the time of the CMV retiniti diagnoi through the time of ilicone oil removal. Patient- and eye-pecific data regarding demographic and clinical characteritic were collected retropectively and tatitical analye were performed to compare difference between the eye that had retinal detachment veru the eye that remained attached following removal of ilicone oil. Reult Eight eye (53%) redetached after a median of 4.0 month following oil removal. Cataract urgery performed at the time of oil removal wa a tatitically ignificant rik factor for redetachment (P = .01). There wa a trend for lower CD4 level to be aociated with a higher rik of retinal redetachment. The ue of a cleral buckle at the time of urgery (initial RD repair or at the time of oil removal) did not reduce the rik of redetachment. Concluion Approximately half of the eye with CMV related retinal detachment may afely undergo oil removal. The rik factor for redetachment wa imultaneou cataract extraction at the time of ilicone oil removal. There wa alo a trend for lower CD4 level to be aociated with a higher rik of retinal redetachment.
