Abstract
Purpoe
To ae the rik of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in children with type 1 diabete mellitu (T1DM) diagnoed at a very early age.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
The record of 51 patient were identified through the diabete databae of the Diviion of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolim at Wahington Univerity chool of Medicine. The patient were diagnoed with T1DM before 2 year of age and were monitored for at leat 5 year after diagnoi. The reult of ophthalmic creening examination were reviewed.
Reult
Fifty-one patient were identified, 33 of whom were monitored for >8 year. None of the patient developed DR.
Concluion
Children have a negligible rik of developing DR during the firt 10 year of life, even if they are diagnoed before age 2. Thee reult indicate that creening for DR i not neceary before age 10.
