Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate patient’ ubjective intraoperative viual experience during vitreou urgery performed under regional anetheia, to acertain if patient were frightened by their viual experience, and to determine the rik factor aociated with a frightening viual experience.
Deign
Multicenter, propective tudy.
Method
ixty-five patient who had vitreou urgery under regional (retrobulbar or peribulbar) anetheia in five center in Ireland, ingapore, and Hong Kong were interviewed within 2 hour of their operation uing a tandardized quetionnaire.
Reult
Thirty patient (46.2%) perceived light perception throughout the entire operation, 19 patient (29.2%) experienced tranient lo of light perception, and 16 patient (24.6%) experienced no light perception throughout the entire duration of the urgery. Nine patient (13.8%) were frightened by their intraoperative viual experience. Patient who were frightened by their viual experience were more likely to ee color (100%) than thoe who were not frightened (55.4%) (P = .010). The mean age of the patient who were frightened wa lower (51.8 year) compared with thoe who were not frightened (64.6 year) (P = .003). The mean duration of urgery wa longer for patient who were frightened (118.9 minute) compared with thoe who were not frightened (91.2 minute) (P = .047).
Concluion
Mot patient undergoing vitreou urgery under regional anetheia retained at leat light perception intraoperatively. Importantly, 13.8% of patient were frightened by their viual experience. A younger age, longer duration of urgery, and perception of color were rik factor for a frightening viual experience.
