Abstract :
Purpoe To review the hitory and current iue urrounding medical profeional liability inurance and it relationhip to medical error and healthcare rik management. Deign Focued literature review and author’ experience. Method Medical profeional liability inurance iue are reviewed in aociation with the occurrence of medical error and the role of healthcare rik management. Reult The riing frequency and everity of claim and lawuit incurred by phyician, a well a ecalating defene cot, have dramatically increaed over the pat everal year and have reulted in accelerated effort to reduce medical error and control practice rik for phyician. Medical error reduction and improved patient outcome are cloely linked to the goal of the medical rik manager by reducing expoure to advere medical event. Management of profeional liability rik by the phyician-led malpractice inurance company not only protect the economic viability of phyician, but alo addree patient afety concern. Concluion Phyician-owned malpractice liability inurance companie will continue to be the dominant provider of inurance for practicing phyician and will erve a the primary ource for lo prevention and rik management ervice. To ucceed in the marketplace, the emergence and importance of the rik manager and incorporation of rik management principle throughout the profeional liability company ha become crucial to the financial tability and ucce of the inurance company. The rik manager provide the neceary advice and upport requeted by phyician to minimize medical liability rik in their daily practice.
