Evaluation of Plama Homocyteine and Rik of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Purpoe To ae the relationhip between plama level of homocyteine and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Deign Cro-ectional, cae-control tudy. Method Fating plama homocyteine level were meaured at two center in 934 individual who were participating in an ancillary tudy of the Age-Related Eye Dieae tudy. There were 547 cae and 387 control ubject, who were determined by fundu photography. Conditional logitic regreion analye were conducted to ae the aociation of homocyteine with AMD. Reult Median value of homocyteine were higher among advanced AMD cae (9.51 mmol/l) compared with peron with no AMD (8.81 mmol/l; P = .01). Value of >12 mmol/l v ≤12 mmol/l were alo aociated with an increaed rik of AMD (P = .023), when controlled for other covariate. Concluion Reult are conitent with a poible mall, independent aociation between higher homocyteine level and AMD. Homocyteine may be a modifiable rik factor for AMD.
