Abstract :
Purpoe
To review recent advance related to the repone to photoreceptor damage and to place thi knowledge in an evolutionary context.
Deign
ynthei of publihed laboratory, clinical, and epidemiologic data.
Method
The author have yntheized the principal publihed finding related to the mechanim and function of the photoreceptor damage repone with the goal of trying to undertand the elective preure that haped it evolution.
Reult
The pat everal year have een coniderable advance in undertanding the molecular and cellular bai of the retina’ repone to photoreceptor damage. From their analyi of laboratory, clinical, and epidemiologic data, the author ugget that the photoreceptor damage repone may have evolved to counter the effect of retinal tear and detachment, infectiou retiniti, and/or light damage.
Concluion
If the natural repone to photoreceptor damage can be fully defined, it may be poible to augment deirable apect of the damage repone and/or uppre undeirable one in the context of a wide variety of photoreceptor dieae.
