  • Abstract
    Purpoe To report the incidence of back pain after photodynamic therapy, which ugget method for prevention that are related to it pathogenei. Deign Retropective cae erie. Method We retropectively oberved 548 patient who had undergone photodynamic therapy with verteporfin. Reult Of 548 patient at the firt treatment, 14 patient (2.6%) experienced pain during the infuion. Eleven patient were being treated for age-related macular degeneration; their mean age wa 81 year, which ignificantly differed from the mean age of the overall age-related macular degeneration group (P = .003). The pain wa mild in eight patient, moderate in four patient, and evere in two patient, with dypnea and precordial pain. Five of the 14 patient had further coure of photodynamic therapy. After being treated prophylactically 60 minute before photodynamic therapy, only one patient reported further mild pain. Concluion The biologic mechanim of back pain may involve a high level of circulating thromboxane that are induced by the lipoomal compoition of verteporfin. Prevention may include hydration, nonteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and halving the infuion rate.
